Carved and Decorated Sperm Whale Figure, circa 1900
About the Item
Antique Carved Sperm Whale, circa 1900, a fine and early hand carved figure of a sperm whale with carved and painted detail to open jaw, in original black paint with highlights. A very well shaped and contoured body carved in good proportion and attitude. The flukes clearly have had breaks and some loss over the years. The paint has a great patina and just enough scuffs and scratches for character. Mounted on old, probably original turned plinth.
The work seems very similar to that of George Grant (1857-1942), son of whaling captain Charles Grant, born aboard a whaleship and harpooning his first whale at the age of 16. He was later the curator of the Nantucket Whaling Museum.
One of the nicer whales we have had in years.
