16th-17th Century Bellarmine Jug
About the Item
Lovely late 16th or early 17th century Westphalian salt glazed stoneware jug of the "bellarmine" type. Also known as Greybeards or Bartmann jugs, these vessels were distinguished by the bearded faces on the base of the bottle's neck and have a mottled glaze made by literally throwing salt onto them while firing in the kiln. This one is a lovely diminutive example and is further decorated with impressed rings and with distinctive "kiss mark" where one vessel touched another while being fired.
