John R Wendt for Ball Black & Co Seven-Piece Medallion Sterling Tea & Coffee Set
About the Item
This neoclassical sterling silver tea and coffee set was designed by renowned 19th century silversmith, John R. Wendt (1826-1907). Recognized as "one of the best designers and chasers in the art", Wendt formed a highly successful partnership with Boston silversmith Augustus Rogers before moving to New York in 1860 to work as principal silversmith to important jewelry and silver retailer Ball, Black & Co. Wendt is known for his distinctive designs and examples of his work are held in the permanent collections of museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Boston's Museum of Fine Art.
This Wendt sterling tea and coffee set consists of a 12" hot water pot with hinged lid and associated four-legged stand. Measures: 10.375" coffee pot with hinged lid, a 9.25" teapot with hinged lid, a 7.5" sugar bowl with lid, a 7.375" cream jug with hinged lid and a 4.375" waste bowl. (All measurements are to the uppermost point.) The set has a combined weight of 163 ozt.
The tea and coffee service has been finished in Wendt's Medallion pattern, introduced in 1862. The set features neoclassical motifs with the covered pieces having flat lids topped with large dimensional Roman helmet finials. The helmet finials are at the center of circular beaded mounts, all of which are bordered by a Greek key pattern. The coffee pot, teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl all have angular beaded handles surmounted by three-dimensional figural busts. The globular and baluster form bodies of the pieces have ornate strapwork with monogrammed circular cartouches framed within engraved anthemia.
The underside of the pieces bear Wendt's shield hallmark which contains silver purity mark ‘925/1000’ along with retailer stamp ‘BALL, BLACK & CO NEW YORK’.
An exceptional set.
