Magnificent Set of 12 Georgian Solid Silver Gilt Dishes - 1780-1811
About the Item
We are delighted to offer this magnificent matched set of Georgian solid silver dishes, all fully gilt in a rich gold tone and remaining in great condition.
This set of 12 dishes is of exactly identical design and size, comprised of seven dishes by William Stroud, London 1811; two by Andrew Fogelberg & Stephen Gilbert, London 1780; one struck three times with the mark of Andrew Fogelberg & Stephen Gilbert; and two with the marks of Elizabeth Jones and "WW", London 1792. Such cases may have occurred when families/owners of silverware wished to add more items later on down the line or replace damaged items and a different firm/silversmith was commissioned to make an identical item.
Apparent upon first glance and vividly captivating, the dishes' gilt lustre and combined presence make a bold statement and centrepiece attraction in any interior setting.
In addition to their aesthetic beauty, these dishes are very practical even in the modern day with the size, number and quality of the dishes accommodating limitless uses with a touch of creativity.
Whilst originally, these dishes may have been intended as dessert dishes - today, one may wish to use them on a dining table with food of their choice or even in an exceptionally stylish and indulgent manner to serve treats on special occasions such as parties or events. Why not get creative; serve your favourite cheeses, and snacks or even serve a seafood platter on a yacht?
The silver gilding (gold layer on solid silver) not only makes for an excellent highlight and contrast in an interior but prevents the silver from tarnishing as quickly as normal wares.
Ideal among other fine objects or even as an accent to other silverware, the gold tone is easy to match and immediately elevates the opulence of any setting. Surprisingly, due to the relatively 'minimalistic' design with no engravings etc, these dishes may also complement modern interiors and artworks very nicely.
A full set of English hallmarks are present on the base of the dishes, with one dish only having three maker's marks stamped.

- Antique Solid Silver Pair of Georgian Large Ladles, Sutherland Crest 1784/5Located in London, GBWe are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this pair of solid silver Georgian ladles, one made by Thomas Northcote & the other George Smith, London 1784/5. The pair is crafted with a classic minimalist Georgian design allowing for the large proportions and quality to aptly present its unembellished beauty. An additional feature of this pair is the rare 'Incuse' duty hallmark present on the rear side of the ladle's handles. This mark was only used during the short span of 1784-5 resulting in such marks being collectable in their own rights. Noteworthy crests are present on the ends of the handle with those bearing the crest of the Sutherland clan. The crest presents a 'wolf passant collared and chained' with the Order of the Garter surrounding it, 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' and a coronet at the top. The pair were eventually discovered at Dunrobin Castle which is situated in Sutherland (Highland area of Scottland), and was/is a very ornate and extravagant castle that is still standing today. During the period these ladles were made, the 1st Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower's ownerships of extensive land towards the latter part of his life eventually resulted in him being one of the wealthiest individuals in Britain to such an extent that titles and speculation such as "The Leviathan...Category
