Fish Server William Bateman 1830 Sterling Silver monogram of burning building
About the Item
An extraordinary sterling silver fish server. William Bateman produced it in 1830 in London. The engraving of a burning building was unfamiliar and fascinating. After the Great London Fire of 1666 a monument was erected and the Court of Common Council ordered that an inscription, in Latin and English, be fixed on the Monument, signifying that “the City of London was burnt and consumed with fire by the treachery and malice of the Papists in September in the year of Our Lord 1666”. Interestingly, in 1830, an anti-Catholic inscription to the monument was removed... and presumably the owner of this fish server was either delighted, or horrified... at the change. I believe most Catholics ate fish on Fridays in 1830 so I tend to think this is a celebration of waning anti-Catholic sentiment in London... almost 200 years ago. Wow! 224 grams

William Bateman II
William Bateman II, the great-grandson of the famed Hester Bateman, is considered the last of the dynasty of Bateman silversmiths. Though his creations differ stylistically from those of his 18th-century ancestors, the incredible, high-caliber workmanship and outstanding skill that serve as the foundation of the Bateman oeuvre are ever-present within Bateman II’s silver.

This exceptional William Bateman wine cooler retains the original, hallmarked detachable liner and push fit cover. The sterling silver torus-shaped cover is ornamented with an applied moulded border to the rim. The surface of the lining is plain and embellished with a contemporary engraved crest of an eagle displayed supporting in the dexter claw a staff erect, thereon hoisted a pennon forked and flowing to the sinister with the lettering 'Per sinum Codanum' - Through the Gulf of Cadonus*. This magnificent cooler was crafted by the renowned and collectable London silversmith William Bateman II. Such wine coolers of this design are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. * This heraldic marking pertains to the Graves-Sawle family, with the motto representing Graves. Condition This antique silver William Bateman wine cooler is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast and applied decoration is very sharp and the engraved crest is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body are clear in keeping with age and location.
