Set Six Marbleized Barr Flight Barr Worcester Neoclassical Dishes
About the Item
This is a set of six Barr Flight Barr Worcester dishes that were hand-painted in Worcester, England, around 1805.
Each dish has a diameter of 8.15 inches.
They're in very good condition, with just a few dishes showing slight rubbing on the outside edge (refer to the close-up image for a better view).
The price of the set is $880.
The dishes are painted in a beautiful marbled pattern with a crest in the center and a wide border. The design is a light grey color and looks very attractive. The crest belongs to the Vaughan Family, originally named 'Warwyn,' meaning Fair Neck.
The crest is blazoned as follows: A boy's head is couped at the shoulders proper, enwrapped about the neck with a snake vert.
It is reserved within a gilt medallion on the gray marble ground.
The border has a modified Greek Key within gilt bands.
During Barr Flight Barr period 1804-1813, the Worcester factory produced porcelain of the highest caliber.
The reverse of each dish has a manganese printed mark with a royal crown and Prince of Wales feathers.
Printed on each dish is:
"Manufacturers To Their Majesties Prince of Wales and Royal Family, Barr Flight Barr Royal Porcelain Works Worcester London House, Flight & Barr Coventry Street Established 1751."
The Vaughan family's ancestors include Moreiddig Warwyn of Breconshire and North Carmarthenshire, who lived in the 12th century. Among his famous descendants was Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine, who fought at Agincourt with King Henry V in 1415. The family lived along the Welsh Marches, which is the old borderland between England and Wales.

Superbly decorated with a continuous deep orange ground band and heavily gilded, highly detailed rams head handles, greek key motif to header and a crowned deer armorial crest to the front and reverse. The fruit cooler is one of the rarest and most coveted tableware pieces amongst antique porcelain. This example is even more valuable with its original liner and lid. Impressed mark to underside. The first record of ice cream in Britain is 1671 on the menu of a feast for the Knights of the Garter held in St. George's Hall at Windsor Castle. At this time it was considered such an exclusive dish that it appeared only on the king's table. The earliest printed recipe appeared in Mrs Eale's Receipts, a work on confectionary which was published in London, 1718. It was not until the second half of the 18th century that ices became more readily available from confectioner's shops, and these pails were commonly found on upper class homes' sideboards to be used for a dessert of ice cream with cut fruit. If ice alone is used to fill the cover and the bucket, the ice cream melts very quickly. Although there is nothing recorded in literature, it is almost certain that a little salt was sprinkled on the ice. Porcelain is the ideal material for ice cream pails...Category
