"Exotic Scene with Female Figure, " Rare and Large Art Deco Platter by Pereny

About the Item

Almost fauvist in its bold use of color, this large (15-inch) platter features a female figure with long tresses framed by boughs laden with fruit or flowers, all executed in a tropical green-blue color that contrasts vividly with the rusty glaze of the rim. This piece is an especially large and ambitious work by Andrew Pereny in Columbus, Ohio, who produced a body of distinctive Art Deco ware from 1933 to 1938. Pereny did glazing and tile work in Flint, Michigan before moving to Columbus to gain an advanced degree in ceramics from Ohio State University. After setting up shop there, he produced pieces that were sold locally, as well as in high-end department stores such as Macy's in New York and J. L. Hudson in Detroit.
