William Ridgway Antique Drabware Bacchus & Pan Jug
About the Item
A quality antique English drabware jug portraying Bacchus and Pan by renowned makers William Ridgway and dating from around 1834. The stoneware jug stands raised on narrow round stepped pedestal base and is of rounded bulbous form with a pinched neck and large raised and formed open pouring spout with a raised handle molded with a figure of Pan applied to the side. The body of the jug is molded in relief with repeat portraits of Bacchus set within a scrolling design with acanthus leaves with fruiting vines applied around the pouring spout. The jug is decorated in drab ochre-colored glazes and typical of these early pieces is not marked. This however a well recorded design by William Ridgway and a good example of this work.
Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market.
The jug is offered in good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
