Vintage Masterpiece Pitcher in Copper by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen

About the Item

Important HK piece for Georg Jensen in Denmark. It is called Masterpiece and has been nicknamed 'The Pregnant Duck' pitcher. It was designed by the danish silversmith and architect Henning Koppel in 1954. Initially it came in stainless steel and sterling silver versions. 57 years later in 2011 a version in copper plated stainless steel was donated by Georg Jensen to a charity auction in Denmark. This is not what's on offer here. Our pitcher is made from solid copper (testet) that has aged and developed a beautiful and rich patina over time. We suspect it was made between 1960-80. Our research indicates that its most probably either a prototype, production sample or a piece unique. It is marked underneath its base in relief: Georg Jensen, Denmark, HK for Henning Koppel. The pitcher is very usable and can contain 1-1.5 liters of fluid.

  • Georg Jensen Koppel Crystal Carafe with Silver Wire by Henning Koppel
    By Georg Jensen, Henning Koppel
    Located in New York, NY
The Koppel crystal carafe is decorated with a flat pure silver thread. The silver thread which 'extends' the 'neck' is inspired by the African tradition of giving a girl a new ring to put around her neck each year. Crystal glass has fascinated cultures throughout the world for thousands of years due to its ability to capture and reflect light. It is most commonly used for drinking glasses, decanters, ornaments and jewelry. The crystal glass has been chosen due to its allure and transparency, making a beautiful contrast to the distinctive fine silver wrapping. Henning Koppel showed an early talent for art, leading him to train in both drawing and aquarelle early on. He continued studies in sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy and later in Paris. His superb drafting skills, developed as a child, helped him in to produce outstanding product renderings of his designs. Product care: Avoid letting any wine remain in the crystal glass carafe and glasses...
