Hispano-Moresque Moorish Copper Lustre Glazed Art Pottery Jug
About the Item
A very stylish Hispano-Moresque or Moorish influence copper lustre glazed art pottery jug dating from the 19th century.
Hispano-Moresque as the name suggests originated from Southern Spain when under the occupation of the Moors. The decorative pottery is tin glazed and painted with copper oxide giving the distinctive metallic lustre finish. The themes tend to be of Islamic and Gothic influence. However there are many countries who have adopted the practices and styles and produce similar styled pieces including in the Middle East where we expect this may have originated from.
This stylish jug is of tall conical form standing on a round foot with a wide top rim with a strap loop handle and with a large pouring spout. The jug is decorated in copper lustre banding with Islamic influenced designs and bears a painted makers mark to the base.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good presentable condition with light wear associated with age and use and with some glaze chipping around the spout and edges.
