King Edward VIII Abdication Cup
About the Item
This limited edition glass cup memorializes the accession and imminent abdication of King Edward VIII. Titled the Prince of Wales on his 16th birthday, Edward was crowned King of England in January 1936, but famously and scandalously abdicated his throne after less than a year in order to marry the American divorcee and socialite Wallis Simpson.
The body of the cup is etched with the King's name and dates of his brief reign. Surprising details abound, including a commemorative silver coin bearing the King's profile embedded in the stem and a glass crown formed within the ball of the stem. One of only 50 ever made, it is a fascinating tribute to one of the most controversial royals in the history of the British Empire.
