Shoji Hamada Studio Pottery Yunomi with Brushed Design
About the Item
A very fine midcentury handcrafted Studio Pottery yunomi decorated with brushed designs renowned potter Shoji Hamada (Japanese, 1894-1978) and probably made at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall. The stoneware drinking cup stands raised on a narrow round foot with a tall cylindrical shaped body pinched slightly around the centre with a raised ridge design. The yunomi has thick grey glazes with a textured finish applied around the foot and lower edge of the cup with the main body decorated in thick stone grey glazes with a brown glazed top rim. Brushed patterns in brown are applied to either side of the body. The yunomi is typically not marked however comes with an excellent provenance.
Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Richard Batterham, who spent two years from 1957 as an apprentice working alongside Bernard Leach at the Leach Pottery and was greatly influenced by the work of Atsuya Hamada who started working at the pottery around the same time, the son of Shoji Hamada. He acquired a number of pieces directly from the artists he worked with and also through Hay Hill in London. Thence consigned by a gentleman owner and collector.
In good condition with a tiny glaze nick to the top rim and with wear associated with age and use.

Shoji Hamada
Shoji Hamada, Designated as a Living National Treasure in 1955, was famed for his return to folk crafts (mingei), establishing the small town of Mashiko as a center of pottery. Hamada espoused simplicity of form in his works, particularly notable in his sugar cane motifs. Hamada strived to reach a style and feeling of innocence through his craft.
