"High Style Female in Profile", Art Deco Trivet, Ivory Glaze, Frazier for Cowan
About the Item
Beautifully enrobed in a pale, ivory-toned glaze, this rare, high style Art Deco trivet depicts a fashionable female figure in profile, her hair curled in repeating waves like the lapping water of an seaside beach. The woman is surrounded by a border adorned with flowers and leaves bound together with ribbon. The artist was Thelma Frazier, one of a spectacular group of artists gathered together by Cowan Pottery in the 1920s, many of whom -- such as Waylande Gregory and Victor Schreckengost -- went on to distinguished careers after Cowan closed in the early 1930s. Frazier later married Edward Winter, one of America's greatest enamel artists before and after World War II, and at that point she did both ceramic and enamel work. This piece is well marked on the bottom.

- "Leaping Antelope Dish", Rare, Early work by Waylande Gregory for CowanBy Cowan Pottery, Waylande GregoryLocated in Philadelphia, PAThis lovely oblong dish features one of the classic subjects of high style Art Deco design -- the leaping antelope -- but in other respects it is highly unusual. It is an early work of Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery, before he struck out on his own in the 1930s, and it is finished with a striking, speckled glaze in a rich, burnt sienna color, with a touch of green in the depths of the dish. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft...Category
