Continental Novelty Majolica Pottery Character Lidded Tobacco Jar

About the Item

A delightful antique novelty Continental majolica pottery lidded character tobacco jar of a man wearing a fez type hat dating from the latter 19th century. The jar is modeled as the head of a man watching an insect perched on his nose. He is dressed in a high collar and bow tie and wears a fez type hat with a tassel. The figure is hand painted in naturalistic colors with some gilded highlights applied to the bow tie. The hat forms a cover. The pot is numbered to the base and both the cover and body are also numbered 6151. There is a tiny pin sized glaze nick to the edge of the hat but otherwise in very good original condition.
