Bybee Pottery Set of 2 Bowls, Blue Spongeware Kentucky Art Pottery

About the Item

Set of 2 serving bowls was handmade by Bybee Pottery and hand decorated in their trademark blue spongeware style. Small condiment bowl is made in shape of a skillet; serving bowl has traditional round shape with fluted rim. Both pieces are clearly signed on the bottom. Bybee Pottery is an art pottery in Madison County, Kentucky USA, that was operated by various members of Cornelison family from 1809 to 2019. While the earliest sales records start from 1845, even this later date makes the pottery the oldest industry in Madison County. Their pieces are made of local red clay that is mined close to the pottery; each piece is thrown and shaped by hand. The glaze is applied with intentional imperfections, such as glaze skips, to emphasize handmade processing and rustic appeal of the pieces.
