A Fine Georgian Sterling Silver Wine Funnel by Robert & Samuel Hennell, 1808
About the Item
A very fine & complete George III sterling silver wine funnel, showing a plain bowl with a pierced basin, rising to a reeded rim and a flattened thumbpiece. The underside of the bowl having a conforming circular foot that accepts a removable muslin suspension ring as well as its detachable funnel stem. (Muslin rings are intended to hold a piece of muslin or cheesecloth between the basin & the stem in order to filter out sediment, which are seldom found intact with the majority of wine funnels).
The basin bears London hallmarks with date letter for 1808 together with makers marks for noted London silversmiths Robert Hennell 1st & Samuel Hennell, the funnel stem showing partially rubbed hallmarks but with consistent makers marks. Weight, 90.5 grams.
The Hennell family of silversmiths are regarded as being one of Britain’s most esteemed silversmithing firms, with its history dating back to 1728.
