Spinal I, Unique Tree Inspired White & Aubergine Glass Vase by Mårten Medbo

About the Item

‘Spinal I' is a limited edition (ed 49) tree-inspired white & aubergine glass vase by the Swedish artist, Mårten Medbo. Among his work, there are numerous examples of pieces having a resemblance to anthropomorphic or biomorphic structures, without being completely identifiable as such. Medbo’s vessels and sculptures sometimes resemble items suddenly frozen in the process of organic growth or expansion. He is drawn towards irregularities and idiosyncrasies. The structures seem to be on the verge of breaking free from their inner logic; they loosen up, start to glow mysteriously, or even mutate. Medbo’s pieces fascinate by virtue of their strangeness and physical intensity rather than by beauty or sophistication. Medbo is an award winning multi disciplinary artist that does not like to be pigeonholed, not wishing to be defined by a particular material, method or aesthetic. Working and exhibiting internationally he uses both glass and ceramics as his medium across a spectrum of forms: bowls, vases, sculptural pieces and large-scale public commissions.

  • Horizon in Violet, an Abstract Aubergine & Lilac Glass Vase by Bethany Wood
    By Bethany Wood
    Located in London, GB
'Horizon in Violet' is a unique artwork by the British artist, Bethany Wood. An equal passion for painting physically inspires how she controls and manipulates her glass. Recreating the fleeting nature of brush strokes, Wood’s molten colours traverse across the surface of her glass canvases blending in a myriad of hues. Unlike their flat painterly counterparts, these combine and merge, forming spontaneous watery and lava like abstract relief flourishes. Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources, Wood’s influences are taken directly from the world around us, elements of the inner-city sit alongside expansive landscapes. Reoccurring themes are Graffiti & Urban Culture, exploration & travel. In the artist's own words; "As a multidisciplinary artist, I have begun to merge my two artistic passions, painting and Glassmaking. I like to express myself with the fluidity of the material. The Directional arrangement of a colour palette can form the depth of an abstract Landscape. I use my own paintings as a reference whilst making in the hot shop. Each individual artwork from my series has been inspired by a specific place. Serendipity of abstraction has always been an inspiration for me; the coincidental elements which catch the eye of the viewer. The palette, composition and depth I have attained are taken from nature, with a bold but elegant swipe of my own personal, Expressionist style" Rising glass star, Wood graduated from De Montfort...

  • Turbulence in Aubergine, a Bubbly Glass Sculpture / Vessel by Anthony Scala
    By Anthony Scala
    Located in London, GB
Turbulence in Aubergine is a unique glass sculpture by the British artist, Anthony Scala. Sculpted and handblown, this artwork is created from very thick glass which is filled with a multitude of trapped bubbles. Each one sparkles and catches the light, all enhanced by the intense yet fading colour of the main form. About this collection in the artist's own words; "My Turbulence pieces have always been a way for me to step back from my precise optical work and re-engage with the material on a more ‘physical’ level. The colours I choose are always soft, muted shades which act as the perfect backdrop for the drama and movement of the effervescence. The shapes are unfussy so as not to detract from the light play given off by the myriad of bubbles. The pieces are blown incredibly thickly. This is to maximise the depth of the glass and impart an intensity of movement to the effervescence captured within each piece" With a career in glass now spanning over 20 years, Scala creates art works that can only be described as acts of precision. As equally beautiful as they are meticulously created and despite being a hugely skilled glass blower, it is with cold working that Scala excels. Initially qualified as an architectural model maker, it was during this time that Scala learnt many disciplines that would be equally relevant to and ultimately inform his practice today. His passion for glass was discovered however during an apprenticeship with Peter Layton at his studio at London Glassblowing. The beginning of a long standing association for him with this acclaimed studio. In 2005 at the age of 27, Scala won the prestigious 'Glass Sellers Award' (other recipients have included Alison Kinnard, Colin Reid, Richard Jackson, and Bob Crooks...
