Scandinavian Modern Blue Ceramic Vase, Ingrid Atterberg for Upsala Ekeby, 1960s
About the Item
Exquisitely crafted by renowned ceramist Ingrid Atterberg for Uppsala Ekeby, this black and blue chamotte vase with a distinctive handle and rough surface epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Designed exclusively as part of the 4330-785 series for Åhlen & Holm in the 1960s, this piece showcases Atterberg's exceptional talent and attention to detail.
The upper part, mouth, and handle of the vase are fashioned from smooth earthenware, boasting a black glaze. In contrast, the rest of the vase is constructed from chamotte (grog), characterized by its highly textured surface, and colored with a blue glaze. The vase has the shape of a classical urn and a swelling shape with a unique hand-decorated finish, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
Standing at a height of 13 cm, this small vase model, numbered 4330/785, is a testament to Upsala-Ekeby's era-typical craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility. Marked with a deep stamp indicating UE Sweden, 4330/785, and Abg.
These vases, designed by Atterberg and produced by Upsala Ekeby exclusively for the department store Åhlen & Holm, exemplify her enduring influence on Scandinavian ceramic design. Marked with the impressions UE Sweden, product numbers, and Abg, each piece bears the hallmark of Atterberg's distinctive style and craftsmanship.
