Lizzie Wilkins Della Robbia Birkenhead Arts & Crafts Vase

About the Item

A stylish and sought after English Arts & Crafts twin handled art pottery vase hand painted by Lizzie Wilkins for Della Robbia Birkenhead and dated 1896. The vase of flagon shape is made in terracotta clay and stands on a narrow round foot the bulbous body with a narrow funnel shaped neck with loop handles applied either side. The body of the vase is hand decorated in a simplistic stylized fashion with a tall plant within a scroll and flame border with small flowerheads wo either side of the neck. The vase is painted in tones of yellow and green including elements of the underlying red clay against a cream colored ground. The vase has an incised DR and galleon mark for Della Robbia to the base along with green painted initials LW for Lizzie Wilkins. It also unusually bears a signature ‘Lizzie’. The vase is also dated 1896. Provenance: acquired from the UK Art Market. In good presentable and original condition with chip to the underside of one handle and with customary glaze chips around the top rim.
