David Leach Attributed Early Leach Pottery Foxglove Pattern Vase
About the Item
A rare and early Leach pottery studio pottery vase decorated in the foxglove pattern attributed to David Leach (British, 1911-2005) and dating from around 1930. David starting working with his father at the Leach Pottery in St Ives in 1930 and his earliest works were unmarked with marks being used by him from around 1932. The foxglove became one his favoured patterns and it is believed that this is either a very early example of that or a piece produced by his father, Bernard Leach inspiring the used of the design. The vase is of rounded form standing on narrow round base and has a gently flaring neck. The body is decorated in dark tenmoku glazes with three repeated iron brushwork designs of possibly foxglove or thistle applied around the body. The vase has an impressed Leach pottery mark to the base.
