Japanese antique pottery "Shigaraki" large vase/1400-1500/Natural glaze pottery

About the Item

I have received a very nice Jar. This is Shigaraki ware, one of the six great kilns that have existed in Japan since ancient times. Shigaraki is a historic kiln located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. (The area marked with a red circle on the map is the Shigaraki kiln.) It is said to have originated around the 8th century. This item is a large pot fired around the 15th century. At that time, the culture of tea was spreading, and the demand for tea pots increased. This pot may also have been made as a tea pot. A characteristic feature of vases from this period is that the maximum diameter appears approximately toward the center. The baked color is reddish-brown, and small stones called feldspars have melted and become white grains that appear on the surface. This is the biggest feature of Shigaraki ware. In addition, as a reference material, a similar item from the same era as this item was published in the Japanese art book ``Shigaraki Ware Masterpiece Encyclopedia'', so I have attached a photo. Also, the top part is covered with natural glaze and turns a light green color. The color of this pot also changes depending on the angle, which makes it very attractive. It is a vase that gives you a sense of wabi-sabi that is unique to Japan. This item has a very strong presence and is highly recommended. However, it is a very old item. If you fill it with water, it will leak from the bottom, so if you want to display flowers, fill another container with water and put it inside the jar. Also, I want many people to know the goodness of antiques, so I set the price reasonably. Weight: 10.4kg

It is "Shigaraki ware". Shigaraki is a historical kiln located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is said to have originated in the 8th century. In Japan, there are 6 historical kilns that are still in operation. One of them. This is a vase made around 1573-1603. We often see jars like this in Shigaraki ware, but vases with a lot of natural glaze like this are very rare. Not all jars are in this state, and this phenomenon occurs due to the overlap of various factors such as the place where the pottery is placed in the pot, the force and temperature of the flame, the direction of the wind, etc. . In particular, this one has a lot of burnt ash sticking to it on one side, giving it a lava-like surface, and the other side has melted ash, and the glassy natural glaze draws beautiful lines and hangs down. This is truly an art of nature...
