About the Item
Folk Art Primitive whirligig, circa 19th century
(Working moving item)
This lot is a very rare and unique handmade functioning 19th century Folk Art whirligig. The item in unique and very rare to market, it’s completely handmade, with cast iron cogs, hand carved wooden figures and the item works smoothly when the main cog is turned to animated the item. Once the main cog is turned the hand carved figure of the man moves forward to turn the main central function of the whirligig. The item still has all its original primitive handmade art features including, a moving saw, moving wooden pump, cogs, pulleys, central rope wheel, main 2 hand carved figures (one is missing its head).
In conclusion this is an original very rare to market functioning 19th century Folk Art primitive whirligig, It’s simply a piece of art and highly desirable. We have never seen a complete item of this nature (as some figures come to market and sell for in excess of £1200 alone). This item is complete and in wonderful condition, and it works which makes it very rare and collectable.
Dimensions: H 24” x W 20” x D 20”
Condition:
The item is completely solid and structurally sound, it shows age through wear and tear which can be seen through scratches, scuffs and faded patina to the wood. Only the main central part of this whirligig works, however the other original parts still move and are all present. The cogs show rust through age however the movement is still smooth. The wood has been lightly waxed to protect it and the item is in overall very good condition for its age.
A video of the item in motion can be supplied upon request.
