Louis Auguste Hiolin Bronze Titled “Au Loup” Loup

About the Item

A patinated figural bronze statue (“Chase the Wolf”), by French artist Louis Auguste Hiolin (1846-1912). The sculpture depicts a young shepherd and his dog who, after discovering their fallen lamb, are in pursuit of the unseen wolf responsible for its death. French hunting scenes such as this one were particularly popular in the 19th century and part of a new style known as Realism. Realism was especially prominent in France, and rejected the idealized academic styles of the past in favour of everyday subjects. In addition, France has long had a history of rich hunting and riding traditions, of which it remains exceedingly proud. Hiolin went to Paris in 1864 and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts the following year. He was taken prisoner in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war and could not complete his studies until his return to France. Subsequently he received a number of commissions for various monuments to be erected around France. His best known work is in fact this particular bronze which the artist presented as an ” Hors Concours” in the Salon in 1887. Such was this sculpture’s impact that the City of Paris acquired it and is now on display at city’s the Buttes-Chaumont Park.
