The German producer Goebel made the first Hummel figures in 1935. For this he used children's illustrations made by the nun sister Berta Hummel (1909 - 1946)

Berta Hummel, also known as Zr. Maria Innocentia, was a German artist. She is best known for the ceramics that we now know better as the Hummels or Hummeltjes
* 1871 Franz Detleff Goebel and his son William founded F&W Goebel began to produce slate pencils and marbles
* 1935 The first M.I. Hummel figurine was created by William Goebel Porzellanfabrik W. Goebel in Oeslau, today Rödental, near Coburgand M.I. Hummel figurines were first introduced into the market place at the 1935 Leipzig Spring Fair
* 1945 The figurines would gain popularity in the United States when returning American soldiers brought them home
* In 1955 Gerhard Skrobek and in 1964 Helmut Fischer came employed at the Goebel Porzellanfabrik
* 1977 The Goebel Collectors' Club is established
* 1989 The Goebel Collectors' Club expanded internationally and changed the name to the M. I. Hummel Club
* 2006 Goebel Porcelain Factory files for bankruptcy. Goebel reorganized and decided to shutter the Hummel factory
* 2008 Goebel Germany discontinued the figures.
