"Brother Against Brother, " Rare Art Deco Silver Medal/Sculptural Piece by De Lue
About the Item
A brilliant and rare example of late Art Deco sculpture struck in solid silver, this medal was designed by Donald De Lue in 1965 as part of the larger New York University Hall of Fame for Great Americans Series. On one side it depicts two nude horsemen on rearing steeds, raising their swords against each other -- representing the North and South during the Civil War. Below the hooves of the horses, a sunburst and broken chain is shown, indicating the end of slavery. The other side is a relief portrait of Robert E. Lee. New York University worked with several other entities -- including the National Sculpture Society, the Medallic Art Company, and the Coin and Currency Institute to sponsor and market a total of 96 medals sculpted by some of the leading artists of the day. Silver medals by De Lue are among the most scarce and desirable.

Donald De Lue
Donald De Lue was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1897. He was an American sculptor, best known for his public monuments. De Lue studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and later served as an assistant to sculptors Richard Henry Recchia and Robert P. Baker. This was followed by five years in Paris where he continued his study, while working as an assistant to various French artists. He returned to the United States where he was engaged by Bryant Baker. In 1940, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1943.
