Antique George van der Straeten Art Nouveau Bronze Bust of Woman with Cherries
About the Item
Georges Van Der Straeten (Belgian, 1856-1941) created this lovely bronze bust sculpture of a young woman with two cherries held between her teeth. It is in excellent condition with no visible damage to the bronze.
It sits on a bevelled marble base that measures: 3" x 2.75" There are a couple tiny chips on the base but they are not very noticeable.
The bronze cast bust measures: 9.0” high (22.8 cm) (bottom of base to tip of hat) by 4.25” wide (10.7 cm.) (side to side). Perfect size for any table top.
The artist's signature can be found engraved on the back of the sculpture. There is also the foundry mark 'SOCIETÉ DES BRONZES DE PARIS' on bottom on the backside.
This artist is representative of the Belle Époque, a period when Art Nouveau appeared, an international artistic movement that broke with academic production. In this sense, it constitutes a new way of expressing oneself perfectly in phase with this period of political, social, technological and intellectual innovation.
The Société des Bronzes de Paris was active from approximately 1875 to 1930, this foundry was located at 41 boulevard du Temple and 14 rue Béranger in Paris.
