Professor Fritz Klee who was one of the key German figures of German porcelain design and architecture of the art deco period from 1908 to 1939. Klee originally studied architecture at the technical university in Munich, after which he was employed by the Stadtbauamt in Munich from 1904 to 1908, including as the artistic direction of the construction office of Schwabing Hospital, where five mosaics made to order still adorn the façade of the main building.
In 1907 he was given the direction of the newly founded state porcelain college in selb, whose director he remained until 1939. In 1911, he was appointed Royal Bavarian Professor because of his outstanding achievements and in 1912 he became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and Bauhaus Near Design association.
From 1917 to 1922 Klee was also the artistic director of the art department of Lorenz Hutschenreuther a.g., for whom he made a variety of dignified designs until 1939. in his spare time, he made tinkering puppets, with which he performed plays together with friends. In 1939 Klee to Stuttgart were he continued making drawings and collages. Klee also designed porcelain for Paul Müller, Zeh Scherzer and Heinrich & co.
Hutschenreuther is the name of a German family that established the production of porcelain in northern Bavaria, starting in 1814. The Hutschenreuther porcelain business was founded in 1814 by Carol’s Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) in Hohenberg an Der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte (Wallendorf.)
After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her two sons. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a firedestroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt. From 1860, they produced hand-painted and gilded porcelain products.
In 1857, Lorenz Hutschenreuther, the elder son of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, established a porcelain factory in Self. They expanded from 1902 to 1969 and were named Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuthre AG Selb (Lorenz Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factories Company, Selb.)
The two marks on the base translate that this piece is from the Hutschenreuther Selb Art Department and that Professor Fritz Klee was the designer of the piece and the Director of the Technical School.
