French Early 20 Century Bronze of Two Playful Monkeys signed Rochard
About the Item
A patinated bronze sculpture depicting two monkeys embracing as they both pull in a tree branch by Irene Rochard (1906-1984).
Irénée Rochard was born in Villefranche sur Saône in 1906, in a family of artists: his mother was a painter and his brother became the actor-singer Armand Mestral. When he chose the course of an artist’s life he soon turned to animal sculpting. Rochard was a successful sculptor during the Art Deco period and became an associate of the Salon des Beaux Arts Francais. He won the bronze medal at their salon in 1941. Between the two world wars, he frequently met with the circles of animal sculpture artists, mainly with François Pompom and Marcel Edouard Sando. He expressed his talents mostly through bronze but also worked with ceramics, wood, granite and marble. He constantly aimed at giving a manner of intelligence to his animals, to try to bring out their personality, their gentleness, or their fierceness. In this particular bronze the sculptor chose to depict the monkeys in a playful mischievous mode.

- Pair of French 19th Century Figurative Patinated Bronze Candelabra LampsBy J. PradierLocated in Vancouver, British ColumbiaA beautifully cast pair of French 19th century neoclassical patinated figural bronze nine arm candelabra after a model by Jaen Jacques Pradier They are signed J. Pradier and were converted into lamps in the 20th century. Each candelabra is cast as classically draped maiden with one representing Phyrne and the other unknown, standing on a circular stepped dark green marble socle base. There are no visible foundry marks on the bronzes. Born in Geneva in 1792 in Switzerland, Pradier was the son of a Protestant family from Toulouse. He left for Paris in 1807 to work with his elder brother, Charles-Simon Pradier, an engraver, and also attended the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814-1818 at the Villa Médici. Pradier made his debut at the Salon in 1819 and quickly acquired a reputation as a competent artist. He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Paris. In 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts.
