Roland Wilhelmsson "The Ark" Wooden Sculpture, Sweden, 1987
About the Item
This one-off sculpture by Swedish designer, Roland Wilhelmsson, is a unique testament to his approach to, and philosophy of design. The design language of this sculpture is stylistically closer to the organic elegance of modernism than the playfulness of postmodernism, therefore it is guaranteed to fit into, and stand out in any style and type of space.
Wilhelmsson was a designer known for his innovative use of materials and his minimalist approach to design. He was one of the most prominent furniture designers of the post-war period in Sweden, and his work was characterized by its simplicity, elegance, and functionality. His minimalistic and timeless language of forms appears in every inch of this bowl that is in the field between art, design, and handicraft. This sculptural bowl is skilfully carved from a single block of wood into the shape of an ark. The design recalls an array of familiar references including natural shapes. Seemingly gravity defying, this sculpture is delicate despite its solid beech wood material. Balancing on one side, the pattern, and colour variety of the wood becomes apparent, adding depth to the carved design. The inherent organicity is also apparent in the shape that doesn’t follow strict geometric principles, instead, has a natural flow to it and resembles an ark, the inspiration behind the name of this piece. The evident time-consuming work that went into the creation of this piece is the element that adds the most to its beauty besides the wood. This piece can be a highlight in any decor and serve as a bowl as well, guaranteed to be a wonderful conversation piece.
Wilhelmsson's work has been exhibited in several major museums and galleries around the world, and he was awarded numerous design awards during his career, including the Swedish Design Prize and the Lunning Prize. This sculpture is a true one-off rarity and is signed ‘Roland Wilhelmsson (Arken) Vidja Aug 1987’.

- Roland Wilhelmsson “Kvadrat” Coffee Table, Sweden 1970sBy Roland WilhelmssonLocated in Utrecht, NLDesigned by Roland Wilhelmsson, this “Kvadrat” table is from the era when Swedish design and culture started attracting design-conscious international buyers on a large scale. The model’s design is dated to 1972, and this particular table was manufactured in Huskvarna, where the manufactory still operates, for more than four generations now. Swedish furniture and interior design culture went through dramatic changes during the 1970s. The effects of the late 1960s’ rebellious view of design, production and consumption had an impact in the form of freer furnishings and resource-efficient furniture in simpler materials. In the mid-1970s, rustic pine furniture often in oversized dimensions - such as this table - suddenly became the highest fashion. Therefore, the local and resource-efficient craft received a renaissance. This “Kvadrat” coffee table...Category
