Eye of Bravery, a Red & Black Abstract Glass Artwork by Yorgos Papadopoulos
About the Item
‘Eye of Bravery’ is a unique sculpture by the Cypriot artist, Yorgos Papadopoulos, created from glass, silicone and fluorescent pigments with a hematite patinated steel bezel and stand.
Papadopoulos has reworked the iconic 'Evil Eye' amulet with his Stratified Jewels Collection. Taking this simple composition as a starting point, the scale is blown up and the colours completely reworked using resins and glass pigments.
Using a pioneering technique he developed at the Royal College of Art. Yorgos combines pigments and shattered sheets of industrial glass which he then re-laminates them to create architectural-scale artworks that look fragile but are extremely durable.
Yorgos Papadopoulos initially studied as an interior designer at Middlesex University changing to a Ceramics Diploma at the City Lit in London. Whilst studying for his MA in ceramics at the RCA, Papadopoulos became drawn to the glass studios and after an incident where a sheet of industrial glass was broken, he became seduced by the material’s contradictory qualities. Excited by what is normally viewed as a bad outcome in the glass community he spent the rest of his MA experimenting with and breaking glass.
‘Glass is my canvas, hammers are my brushes,’ says Papadopoulos. His ability to exploit and harness accident has informed his entire working practice. His architectural panels create a stunning focus in cool modern spaces, the contrast between the unpredictable movement of fracture and the clean lines of contemporary architecture excite the eye.
Papadopoulos’ work is represented in private collections globally and public collections including; Eskishihir Glass Museum, Eskishihir (Turkey), Derix Glass Studio Taunusstein (Germany) and British Airways Art Collection - Heathrow T4 (UK). He is the author of the A&C Black book Glass Lamination.
Most recent and most notably, he was awarded 1st Prize at the European Glass Context 2021. The corresponding exhibition was held at Bornholm Kunstmuseum.

- Resonance II, clear undulating woven glass abstract artwork by Cathryn ShillingBy Cathryn ShillingLocated in London, GB'Resonance II' is a unique sculpture by the British artist, Cathryn Shilling. Cathryn Shilling began her arts career as a graphic designer but went on to study glass after moving to Connecticut with her family. On returning to the UK she studied kiln formed glass at Kensington and Chelsea College and blown glass with Peter Layton at the London Glassblowing Workshop. She set up studio in London in 2007 from where she has gone on to create a huge body and variety of work. Shilling experiments with colour and technique to produce beautiful one off sculptures. Her innovative pieces push the glass beyond our usual comfort zones. With some sculptures, glass rods are woven together like fabric, mimicking the flexibility and movement of cloth. The apparent frailty of the glass is balanced by the strong dynamic forms, differing levels of light picking out layers of colour. With other works, bubbles are trapped in swathes of watery hues. Her colour palette and choice of forms are very much informed by the various natural states in which water is found: icebergs, waterfalls and whirlpools for example. Shilling’s work has been collected and widely exhibited internationally including: Ireland Glass Biennale 2019 at Dublin Castle...Category
