17th Century Antique Ebony and Gilt Table Clock by Edward Burgis of London
About the Item
A rare James II ebony and gilt-metal basket-top quarter-striking spring table clock. The latched 7 1/4 inch square dial has a matted centre, silvered and engraved chapter-ring with strike or silent above 'XII'.
The three-train verge fusee movement quarter-strikes on two bells and has a beautifully engraved backplate with tulips and scrollwork, and the maker's name 'Edward Burgis Londini fecit'.
Literature:
Edward Burgis lived in St Saviour's Southwark. Although he seems never to have joined the Clockmakers' Company, he was well respected by them and was asked to adjudicate a clockmaking contest on their behalf. Longcase, bracket, and lantern clocks by him survive. He was active from probably the 1670s until well into the first quarter of the 18th century.
