Mahogany case standing on a stepped base with ribbed decoration and standing on four brass ball feet, chamfered top surmounted by a brass pineapple finial.
Cast brass bezel with bevelled glass opening to a painted dial with Roman numerals signed ‘John Garth, Harrogate’. Original ‘blued’ steel moonpoise hands, side viewing apertures and brass ringed carrying handles.
Rear glazed door opening to a fine quality eight day Fusee movement with ‘A’ framed brass plates, anchor escapement and pendulum holdfast, C 1820
Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the world by Brian Loomes lists John Garth as working in Harroagte, c 1790.
Yorkshire clockmakers also by Loomes records John Garth as being both a watchmaker and a jeweller keeping retail premises in Harrogate from c.1822-26, he also owned a shop in Knaresborough High Street from 1822-1844. Also listed is Thornton Garth (thought to be John’s brother) who worked as a watch and clockmaker from the shop in Knaresborough, however, by 1834 it appears that he moved on to Bramley near Leeds and by 1850 he is listed as working from 15, Mason Street in Leeds.

John Garth
John Garth grew up in Topeka, Kansas and attended Washburn University, Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from Yale University in 1914. He studied at the Arts Student League and in Europe from 1914–15, including being in Berlin, working with Renoyitski and Conrad Fehrand. Garth taught at the Roberts college in Constantinople for eight months, returned briefly to Topeka and then was in Hawaii in 1916. He served in World War I, then settled in San Francisco, California. Garth temporarily was art director of the Pacific Railways Advertising Company and from 1920–35 conducted the Garth School of Art.

- A Regency Quarter Chiming Bracket ClockBy A. & J. ThwaitesLocated in Amersham, GBA very fine triple fusee quarter chiming bracket clock in an ebonised case in remarkable original condition. The eight day triple fusee movement with anchor escapement and long heavy bob pendulum and hold fast, chimes on a nest of eight graduated bells with a seperate bell to strike the hours. The movement also has a pull correction lever. The cream painted roman dial is fitted behind the original convex glass held in with a brass ogee bezel, the case has front and rear locks with the movement visible through a glaze back door. The movement is housed in an oak case veneered in ebonised fruitwood with brass case decorations and fish scale sound frets backed with yellow silk, the break arch top is surmounted by a single brass bound pad. The dial and back plate both signed by Thomas Bray, the movement is also stamped J Thwaites 4677 on the front plate behind the dial. This leads us to believe this is one of the two clocks recorded as being made by Thwaites for Thomas Bray to retail. The serial number can be traced in the Thwaites day books and dates the clock to 1811. John Thwaites was a prolific clock maker who specialised in quarter chiming and musical clocks often manufacturing movements for some of London’s most prestigious clock makers. John Thwaites was Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1815, 1819 and 1820, his company eventually went on to found the famous Thwaites and Reed company.
