Greek Neoclassical Bronze Mantel Clock by Honore Pons
About the Item
Our Greek Revival period mantel clock in bronze with Siena marble case comes from the celebrated French horologist, Pierre-César Honoré Pons (1807-1846), circa 1830s. Movement signed Pons.
It depicts Agamemnon, the hero of the Trojan War from Homer's Illiad, standing upon a rocky outcrop raising his fist to the sky.
Pons was trained by Antide Janvier, the official clockmaker to King Louis XVI, and was based in the northern French commune of Saint-Nicolas d’Aliermont. He was awarded the Croix de la Légion by King Louis Philippe in 1839.

Honoré Pons
Honoré Pons was highly respected by his contemporary horologists and connoisseurs of Fine quality clocks and watches and today his work is held in major art collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The movement of this clock is stamped Pons 1825.

It is an unusual and very beautiful item, which has been expertly crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu). The clock will add elegance and sophistication to a mantelpiece. The clock features a table-form body which is topped by a classical urn. The urn is crowned by a pomegranate finial and mounted with twin handles in the shape of rams’ heads with rings in their mouths. The urn is decorated with twisted and cabled fluting, a belt draped with foliate swags, panelled motifs and a ropework band. The urn stands on a table-shaped body which is surmounted by outward-pointing pinecone finials and laurel branches.
