Fine and Early Bronze and Sienna Marble Horses, Mare Tending Her Foal circa 1820
About the Item
A beautiful, original and early clock depicting a mare tending her foal. Beautifully and delicately modelled in bronze, full of life and movement with a lovely antique patina. The clock is mounted in a Sienna marble plinth mounted with crisp bronze with detail of cornucopia, acanthus and scrolls.
The dial is silvered bronze with a gilt bronze surround and is complete with original fine blued steel hands. The original rear bezel is also glazed and has a silvered sight ring. The serial number 150 is marked on the front and rear bezel as well as the movement.
The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. It is an early movement design with silk suspension and hammer stop spring. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. A video clip is available on request.
Condition of the case is very good, the Sienna marble has some old repairs and a good color and polish. - Fine and Early Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French ClockBy Henri Picard, Raingo Frères, Manufacture Nationale de SèvresLocated in Belper, DerbyshireA fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding clean and bright with only slight wear and discolouration. Porcelain is also excellent with no damage and hardly any wear. A few porcelain jewels are missing from the top left hand panel where the clock has been held for winding. The dial has a slight firing fault near the number five. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu.
