18th Century Georgian Period English Mahogany Inlaid Tea Caddy
About the Item
Beloved for its aesthetic beauty and exceptionally high quality, Georgian period furniture and decoration are arguably the most sought after and enduring pieces in British history. This 230 year old tea caddy is no exception. For your consideration we have a beautiful period Georgian mahogany tea caddy with nicely aged patina. Handcrafted in England during the late 18th century, the case small in stature and of rectangular form, featuring satinwood banded edges and escutcheon, the top, facade and sides adorned with satinwood and ebony round fan marquetry depicting patera, a hinged lid opens to reveal single compartment, the interior retaining remnants of the original liner.
Tea was of exceptional value in the 18th century and the type of tea you could afford, plus of course the vessels you chose to store it in were a great symbol of status. Tea caddies were of course used to both preserve the tea leaves but also to lock it away from the potentially wandering hands of any employees or guests. This is a good quality example of its type, crafted from beautiful mahogany wood with elegant decoration. The overall condition is very good. Highly desirable patina over whole.
