Martin Brothers Grotesque Arm Wrestling Bat Dish, 1884
About the Item
An extremely rare and probably unique two open-mouthed quasi-simian creatures arm-wrestling dish by Robert Wallace Martin for the Martin Brothers dated 1884. The stoneware shallow dish is hand crafted in a flat butterfly shape with the arms of the creatures forming a carrying handle. Glazed in shades of ochre and green the dish is marked to the surface with makers marks and includes the date 1884. Further marks are also applied to the base.
Provenance: Acquired directly from a private North American collection.
The dish has had a break across one side which has been professionally restored with some light restoration to one creature’s ears. Nonetheless a rare and stunning example.
