Marguerite Wildenhain Signed Pond Farm Mid-Century Modern Studio Pottery Bowl
About the Item
A truly spectacular work - a hand painted bird bowl by French-born, American Bauhaus-trained master ceramic artist, educator, and author Marguerite Wildenhain. The color, feel of the work, and radiant glaze are something to behold.
Marguerite Wildenhain was born to a British mother and a German father. She lived in Germany during her formative years studying at the Berlin University of the Arts. Wildenhain later attended Bauhaus in Dornburg from 1919 to 1925. During her time at Bauhaus, Wildenhain studied alongside painters Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky and she worked closely with sculptor Gerhard Marcks and potter Max Krehan. In 1925, Wildenhain became the first woman to earn the Master Potter certification in Germany. In 1940 she was forced to flee Europe and moved to New York and then shortly after to California (while her husband Franz Wildenhain was forced to stay. He would later join her in 1945).
In the early 1940s, Wildenhain relocated to Pond Farm, a tract of farmland owned by architect Gordon Herr and his wife Jane Herr, to help form the Pond Farm workshops which ran primarily from 1949 to 1952. Though the main entity disbanded, Marguerite continued to live and work at Pond Farm and run smaller workshops until 1979.
The bowl is signed by Wildenhain with her traditional "jug" mark and "Pond Farm" inscription. The original price is also still intact written in pencil on the base.
Would certainly be a great addition to any Marguerite Wildenhain/ Pond Farm or Mid-Century Modern pottery/ ceramics collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
