Complete Set of 3 Mid-Century "Maldive" Bowls by Bruno Munari for Danese, 1960s
About the Item
The Maldive bowl was created by the Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari in 1960, and produced by Danese Milano. This piece is no longer being produced. This is a rare complete set including the three sizes in which this item was manufactured, with sides measuring 30, 20 and 14,5 cm. Maldive, as many of Munari's projects (such as A con A, B con B, Concavo Convesso etc.) was conceived to combine the maximum simplicity of production with a meaninful aestethic: the bowl is obtained from a square metal sheet with 4 cuts and 4 folds. The pieces we are offering are from the 1960s production, all stamped with Danese signature mark and with an uniform light patina. One piece, the smallest, bears the remains a stain (2nd picture) that so far we were not able to remove, that however does not deface the beauty of the set.
Maldive bowls bring us back to the golden age of Danese, a small Milanese manufacturer that created timeless objects involving artists in producing simple objects for daily use. In the decade between the late 50s and the late 60s, the most iconic pieces were designed, especially by Bruno Munari and Enzo Mari. These bowls are among the earliest Danese designs.

Bruno Munari
In his prolific career, Bruno Munari was known for various contributions to art, industrial design, film, architecture, art theory, and technology. Munari’s principles and beliefs were built upon his early involvement in the Futurist movement, which he joined at the age of 19 using the pseudonym “Bum.” During the 1930s, Munari began to move towards Constructivism, particularly with his kinetic sculptures, Useless Machines (begun 1933), meant to transform or complicate their surrounding environments. Throughout his career, Munari was captivated by both a sense of whimsy and the manipulation of artificial light. After World War II, Munari also developed radical innovation in graphics, typography, and book publishing, through the latter creating pieces he would call Useless Books.
