Handmade basket. Vegetable fiber and lacquered wood. China, towards the beginning of the 20th century.
Chinese basket with a flattened ovoid shape that combines meticulous and complex basketry work on the body with lid, mouthpieces, handles and foot in lacquered wood. On the tondo that tops the lid, a figurative scene has been represented in a style derived from contemporary ink painting, with precise golden brushstrokes on a black background, red details and the face highlighted in a soft ocher tone. It shows a richly dressed lady in a landscape setting, sitting in front of a stream from which she picks up a veil. ·
