18th Century French Limestone Fireplace Mantel with Shell Detail
About the Item
Salvaged from a countryside chateau in northern France, this fireplace mantel exudes classic French style reminiscent of the Louis XV era. Crafted from limestone and dating to the late 18th century, it showcases intricate hand-carved architectural paneling, accentuated by a centered shell motif on the header.
The mantel's shelf features a gracefully curved shape with a beveled edge, adding to its elegant appeal. Its overall charm is enhanced by a delightful, weathered patina of old white and creamy paint, imbuing it with character and depth that speaks of its rich history.
Found in Normandy, France, 18th century, is hand-carved from limestone and precisely designed.
The fireplace is currently in four pieces (as removed), does not stand on its own, and requires professional installation; no missing pieces.

The fireplace has an impressive, deep stance, with a slightly bowed or “galbee” lintel. The bottom of the lintel is composed of a series of rounded and incurved moldings, shaped in the classic crossbow or serpentine form that was so popular in the early to mid-1700s.
