Clock Frame from Original Penn Station Building in NYC, 6-ft diameter, c 1910

About the Item

Clock frame from the original Pennsylvania Station building in New York City, circa 1910. This Penn Station clock frame was part of one of the four clocks atop the building. Each clock flanked one of the four pairs of allegorical statues portraying day and night that artist Adolph Alexander Weinman was commissioned to carve. His majestic sculptures, with their impressive 6-foot diameter clock components, were situated upon the building from on high, gracing the central portico of the building’s façades. Penn Station is considered a magnum opus of the 20th century. A magnificent example of the Beaux-Art style. Its demolition to the ground beginning in 1963 created an uproar of anger and disbelief, sending shockwaves through the city and the world. "When the Old Penn Station Was Demolished, New York Lost Its Faith."--The New York Times declared. And lost most of the precious artifacts from the building, trucked to landfills or taken home by those working the site. This Penn Station clock frame disappeared. Until now. This clock frame, forged in iron, its roman numerals hammered out on an anvil, is more than a century old, 60 of those years spent in obscurity. It is one of the few prominent architectural elements to have survived the demolition of this monumental building. A rare, prized sculpture. Documented provenance of this clock frame does not exist as most of the building’s artifacts were not salvaged. Provenance is based on our research and conversations with clock collectors and afficionados of the building’s history, who are committed to keeping the spirit of the old Penn Station prominently apart of New York City lore.
