Japanese Antique Wood Carving Frog 1900s-1940s / Sculpture Wabi Sabi

About the Item

This is a very old carved wooden frog made in Japan. It is from the early Showa period (1900s-1940s). The material is probably walnut. It is very well carved from hard natural wood. Frogs are often placed in temples and shrines in Japan, as they are said to drink away evil spirits. It is recommended to place it at the entrance of a house to ward off evil. From this item, you can feel the spirit of “Wabi-sabi,” the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It is the opposite of vulgarity, a beauty that is understated, modest, and unconventional. This is a unique and very rare item. It weighs 800 grams. Since ancient times, people have created and inherited necessary tools from familiar materials to survive in the severe struggle against nature, and have nurtured a lifestyle culture. Over time, as people use these tools, they accumulate a certain flavor and reflect their way of life. The more severe the natural environment and the weaker the human being, the stronger the power of the material. In today's world, where cheap and disposable products are encouraged, the act of repeatedly re-creating things around us by modifying them opens up a new world. With this philosophy in mind, we carefully select and collect beautiful, powerful, and unique Japanese antiques.
