Japanese Edo Two Panel Screen Birds of Prey Hawks
About the Item
Fascinating Japanese 19th century Edo period two-panel screen depicting two perched birds of prey. Painted in the manner of Chokuan Soga (17th century). Large size byobu screen with ink, color natural pigments and gold flecks mounted in a later 20th century screen. Birds of prey (hawk and falcons) were a popular subject matter for Japan's warrior class in the 15th and 16th century as symbols of power and valor. The images are set in a black lacquered frame with a brown silk brocade border.
