About the Item
A stylish antique Khond bronzed metal stylized figure of an Ox dating from the early to mid 20th century made in Orissa, India.
The Khonds are an indigenous Adivasi tribal community in India and produce metal sculptures in a very distinctive and recognizable style.
The ox is considered to be sacred in Hinduism and is a symbol of the Earth. It is honored and garlanded at festivals.
This stylized example is made in a bronzed metal and is filled with black charcoal like substance. The ox wears a collar with bell and is dressed symbols of its importance. The ox is tethered with raised horns and stands on four folded legs. The figure is not marked.
Provenance: Acquired from the British Art Market and from a large collection of Khond and similar Indian metal-ware.
In good condition with wear associated with age.
