Japanese Glazed Ceramic Gohon Chawan Tea Bowl
About the Item
A bespoken Japanese ceramic tea bowl with glazed with fabric insert, pouch and original padded wood tomobako box. The chawan has a slightly irregular wall supported by a high notched foot ring. The glaze features a distinct pinkish spotty pattern on a beige background. This particular glaze style is called Deer's Back (Kase in Japanese) for the resemblance of the dotted deer skin. Originally produced in Korea, Gohon tea bowls were ordered for their use in Japanese tea ceremony. The practice continued in Japan in Hagi and Arashi kilns. This chawan was likely made in one of those kilns in Japan circa 19th century during late Edo or Meiji Period.
The bowl comes with its custom padded wood storage box, a matching pouch and soft molded insert. It bears an interesting paper slip under the lid on which a plaintive poem by a Samurai named Xiang Ma. There is also a small paper lable under the box with a collection number and 'Gohon Tea Bowl" in Kanji. The size of the box 5.75" x 6.85" x 6.85".
