Inoue Ryosai Sumida Gawa Japanese Pottery Character Jug, c.1900
About the Item
A scarce and unusual Japanese Meiji period Sumida Gawa pottery character jug by renowned potter Inoue Ryosai I (Japanese, 1828 – 1899) dating from the 19th century.
Inoue Ryosai became independent in 1866 setting up a kiln in Imado, Asakusa and produced Sumida ware with human and other forms as artistic ceramics for export to the West. This distinctive type of ware received its name from the nearby Sumida river. He was a pioneer of art nouveau in the Meiji era and his pottery is widely collected today.
The jug is modelled in high relief as a standing Rakan holding his robe around him. He wears a hat which forms the rim and pouring spout and this and the top element of his robe is decorated in thick flambe glazing with natural facial features and hand applied with spots of glaze. The lower body and handle, formed as a serpent, is hand painted in tones of red with black painted shoes. A signed seal is applied to the lower body and reads Inoue Ryosai.
Provenance: acquired in the British art market.
A scarce example with age loss to the red and black painted elements however not overpainted and in good presentable condition.
