Japanese Paper Fan with three Sparrows Printed From Aichi Prefecture 1990s

About the Item

This is a fan which was made in Japan around 1990s in Heisei era. This was a gift from the prefecture of Aichi on the September in 1988. This is made with a paper and bamboos. This fan is printed. The design is three sparrows and some leaves. Japanese fans are made of paper on a bamboo frame, usually with a design painted on them. In addition to folding fans (ōgi), the non-bending fans (uchiwa) are popular and commonplace. The fan is primarily used for fanning oneself in hot weather. The uchiwa fan subsequently spread to other parts of Asia, including Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Sri Lanka, and such fans are still used by Buddhist monks as "ceremonial fans".
