Sonia Rykiel quintessentially French black knitted wool coat, circa 1960s

About the Item

Sonia Rykiel figures among the superstar designers of the clothing revolution of the 1960s. Known as the queen of knits, she designed clothes to address the needs and the lifestyle of real women. At the time knitwear was always a thick stitch that resulted in heavy clothing and straight jackets. This knitted coat exemplifies Sonia Rykiel's allure. It’s a fluid and elegant design that privileges freedom of movement. Cleverly constructed from a loop stitch knit that mimics the appearance of astrakhan fur without its stiffness. The design is reminiscent of Chanel's and the house of Patou's sporty look, as it was described then. It features a classic necktie collar, two patch pockets at the hip and a fine ribbed belt. Closure is at the front with a series of black lucite buttons. Interestingly the boxy silhouette and the black colour of this coat shows that Sonia Rykiel's modernity preceded the avant-grade aesthetic of the Japanese and Belgian designers of the 1980s. This exquisite and rare piece is definitely a collectable design from Sonia Rykiel's archives. Stylist notes This piece is relevant for every day. It was designed with comfort, and lightness in mind. An excellent addition for the wardrobe of both young and older women Teamed with a bright black shirt, trousers and pump shoes for a nonchalant chic look.
