Todd Alexander Art
Todd Alexander is an Atlanta artist, armed with imagery, technique, talent and emotion inspired by all walks of life. Born into a family of artists, at a young age, Alexander experimented with watercolor and oil mediums, as well as hand-thrown pottery. He then pursued scientific and medical illustration at the University of Georgia, working afterward to produce anatomically driven creations for the medical industry. Alexander’s creativity has evolved as he re-entered the studio, again picking up once familiar paints and exploring alternative ways to express himself and his subjects. His most recent productions evoke the state of balance towards which he strives, using mixed media of paper, canvas and other elements to align reality with the interpretation of dimension.

- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 8, 2024Alexander McQueen used skulls as a symbol to bring his interest in mortality and the fragility of life to his work. The legendary British fashion designer used skulls (and bones) throughout his designs, including in his scarves, shoes, shirts and other items, starting with his 1992 graduate collection, which focused on Jack the Ripper and his victims.
The skull, of course, is a memento mori, a reminder of death. McQueen frequently juxtaposed the glamour of the catwalk with intimations of our coming doom. McQueen's skull scarf appeared in his Spring 2003 collection. Inspired by the 1986 Roland Joffé film 'The Mission,' the collection featured pirate looks and a shipwreck theme. The scarf soon became widely coveted among celebrities and tastemakers, and it was reproduced by counterfeiters worldwide. The designer's handbags are equally edgy and chic, and his skull-clasp Four-Ring Clutch and other clutches featuring skull motifs have become iconic McQueen accessories.

The American sculptor is known as the father of the mobile, a moving artwork composed of delicately balanced sculptural forms suspended from the ceiling. These kinetic pieces use color, shape and space to convey a sense of unity, and the form of the art allows it to interact with its environment. Find a variety of Alexander Calder art on 1stDibs.
