Joseph Victor Chemin 19th Century French Bronze Sculpture, "Chien au Sucre"
By Joseph Victor Chemin
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This bronze sculpture is by French artist, Joseph Victor Chemin (1825-1901). Chemin is particularly well known for his realistically modeled bronze dogs shown at work and at play. This circa 1870 piece is titled 'Chien au Sucre' translated as 'Sugar Dog' and depicts a collared canine standing on its hind feet while balancing a ball upon its nose.
As seen in the accompanying photos, this engaging bronze has been cast with a high level of detail. The broad-chested dog is posed upon a domed oval plinth with its front paws raised up in the air. The animal's muzzle is slightly elevated with the ball resting upon the tip. The animal's musculature is evident beneath its thick coat and it has also been given well defined facial features. The dog's ears are perked up in concentration, conveying its skill and desire to please.
The sculpture is in excellent original condition with no damage or restoration and has a deep even patina. The piece stands 5.75" as measured to its highest point while the plinth is 3.375" by 2.5". The 14.5 oz piece is signed to the left of the dog's rear left foot.
